DESCRIPTION:Pink Floyd intended to make a movie of its groundbreaking 1979
concept album *The Wall* before it was even recorded. It took nearly three
years\, numerous creative battles and several iterations for director Ala
n Parker (*Fame\, Evita\, The Commitments*) to bring the best-seller to th
e big screen. Rocker-turned-philanthropist Bob Geldof stars as Pink\, a ro
ck star who becomes increasingly isolated and depressed as his fame grows\
, building a metaphorical wall around him in the process. Using the origin
al music (and some written for the movie) as the narrative\, Parker expand
s upon the dark tone of bassist-singer-screenwriter Roger Waters’ autobi
ographical psychodrama with surrealistic imagery and Gerald Scarfe’s riv
eting animations. Parker’s *Wall* is a surrealistic\, often horrifying v
ision of longing and deeply repressed emotions and one of the most terrify
ing musicals you’ll ever see. — *Doug Pullen*
